About Me

Hi! My name is Aspen Karns and I'm currently a Senior majoring in Exercise Science at IU Indianapolis. After graduating with my Bachelor's of Science in Kinesiology, I will be attending IU Indianapolis for 3 more years to achieve my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I was introduced to the world of injury rehabilitation through Track and Field in high school where I and others on the team would get injured. I was curious on how they could recover and get back on their feet. I observed an athletic trainer at my school, then finally got the opportunity to shadow a physical therapist in an outpatient setting. With that observation experience, I knew instantly that I wanted to be a physical therapist. Learn more about me below!

Who I Am

Growing up, I adopted the values of hard work from my immigrant mother who immigrated here to give me a better life and a chance. In school and in athletics, I was expected to succeed and put in the hard work in order to succeed. I was introduced to physical therapy via my Track and Field career in high school, which shaped me into the person I am today. My coach, who was my mentor at the time, pushed us very hard in the weight room, during practice, and made us establish discipline and hard work above everything else, which are values I still hold to this day. Through Track and Field, I was introduced to injury rehabilitation, watching my teammates come down with injuries. Fast forward to Junior and Senior year of college, where I was working at Athletico as a rehabilitation aide. My boss Tim taught me a lot about the physical therapy profession as I worked under him. He taught me how to be curious, that asking questions was okay, and quizzed me on my knowledge of the exercises we did and the injuries we saw to make sure I was actually learning. I look up to him because he's not only very knowledgeable and passionate about physical therapy, but he is able to spark a conversation with any one of his patients and is able to properly listen to and ease their concerns. He is someone I'd like to become in the future as a physical therapist.
